The largest freshwater lake in Central Europe is Lake Balaton. The lake covers an area of 600 square kilometer. Its length is 77 km. Most parts are 3-4 m deep. The deepest point in the lake is the Tihany well (13 m). Its main freshwater source is the river Zala. Today the water-level of the lake is controlled by the Sió.
Climate
During the long, hot summers the temperature of the water rises to between 25 and 27 Celsius degrees. During the cold winters it sometimes freezes over for long periods. The ice is 20-30 cm or sometimes as much as 60 cm thick.
